Jurassic World 2: Fallen Kingdom - A Review

If you are a fan of dinosaurs, action, and adventure, you might have watched Jurassic World 2: Fallen Kingdom, the sequel to the 2015 blockbuster Jurassic World. But is it worth your time and money? In this article, I will give you a brief overview of the movie, its plot, its characters, its themes, and its strengths and weaknesses. I will also share my personal opinion and recommendation, as well as some thoughts on what the future might hold for the Jurassic franchise.

Introduction

What is Jurassic World 2 about?

Jurassic World 2 is a science fiction action film directed by J.A. Bayona and written by Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow. It is the second installment in the Jurassic World trilogy and the fifth installment overall in the Jurassic Park film series. It was released in 2018 and grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

The movie is set three years after the events of Jurassic World, when the theme park on Isla Nublar was destroyed by rampaging dinosaurs. A volcanic eruption threatens to wipe out the remaining dinosaurs on the island, prompting a rescue mission led by former park manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) and former dinosaur trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt). However, they soon discover that they are part of a sinister plot to capture and sell the dinosaurs to wealthy buyers for military and scientific purposes. They must team up with old and new allies to stop the villains and save the dinosaurs from extinction.

Who are the main characters and actors?

The movie features a mix of returning and new characters, each with their own motivations and roles in the story. Here are some of the main ones:

  • Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) - The former operations manager of Jurassic World, who has become an activist for dinosaur rights. She leads the Dinosaur Protection Group, a nonprofit organization that aims to save the dinosaurs from extinction. She is also Owen's ex-girlfriend.

  • Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) - A former Navy SEAL and animal behaviorist, who trained and bonded with a group of velociraptors in Jurassic World. He is especially close to Blue, the alpha raptor. He joins Claire's rescue mission to find Blue and protect her from harm.

  • Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon) - A young girl who lives with her grandfather Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell), a former partner of John Hammond, the founder of Jurassic Park. She is curious about dinosaurs and has a secret connection to them.

  • Eli Mills (Rafe Spall) - Lockwood's ambitious assistant, who oversees his estate and finances. He is also the mastermind behind the plan to capture and sell the dinosaurs to the highest bidder. He is ruthless, greedy, and manipulative.

  • Dr. Henry Wu (BD Wong) - A geneticist who worked for InGen, the company that created the dinosaurs for Jurassic Park and Jurassic World. He is responsible for engineering new hybrid species, such as the Indominus rex in Jurassic World and the Indoraptor in Jurassic World 2. He is obsessed with creating the perfect weapon and has no regard for the ethical implications of his work.

  • Zia Rodriguez (Daniella Pineda) - A former Marine and a paleo-veterinarian, who works for the Dinosaur Protection Group. She is skilled in treating dinosaur injuries and diseases. She is also outspoken and sarcastic.

  • Franklin Webb (Justice Smith) - A former IT technician for Jurassic World, who works as a systems analyst for the Dinosaur Protection Group. He is a hacker and a nerd, who is easily scared and nervous around dinosaurs.

  • Ken Wheatley (Ted Levine) - A mercenary and big-game hunter, who leads the operation to capture the dinosaurs on Isla Nublar. He is cruel, sadistic, and enjoys collecting dinosaur teeth as trophies.

What are the main themes and messages?

Jurassic World 2 explores various themes and messages that are relevant to our contemporary world, such as:

  • The consequences of playing God - The movie shows the dangers of creating and manipulating life forms that are beyond our control and understanding. The dinosaurs are not only a threat to humans, but also to the natural balance of the ecosystem. The movie also questions the morality of cloning and genetic engineering, especially when it involves human DNA.

  • The responsibility of protecting endangered species - The movie raises the issue of whether we have the right to save or let die the dinosaurs, who are the last remnants of a prehistoric era. The movie also challenges us to think about how we treat animals in general, and whether we respect their dignity and autonomy.

  • The greed and corruption of corporations and governments - The movie exposes the dark side of capitalism and politics, where money and power are more important than ethics and justice. The movie depicts how the dinosaurs are exploited and abused for profit and warfare, and how the people who try to stop them are silenced or betrayed.

  • The bond between humans and animals - The movie highlights the positive aspects of coexisting with other creatures, such as friendship, loyalty, empathy, and compassion. The movie shows how Owen and Claire care for and communicate with the dinosaurs, especially Blue, and how Maisie relates to them as well.

Plot summary

The rescue mission on Isla Nublar

The movie begins with a team of mercenaries infiltrating Isla Nublar at night to retrieve a DNA sample from the Indominus rex's skeleton, which lies at the bottom of the lagoon. They are attacked by a mosasaurus and a tyrannosaurus rex, but manage to escape with the sample.

Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., a U.S. Senate hearing debates whether to save or abandon the dinosaurs on Isla Nublar, which is about to erupt. Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), a chaos theorist and survivor of the original Jurassic Park incident, testifies that nature is correcting itself and that humans should let the dinosaurs die.

Claire Dearing, who has been lobbying for dinosaur rights, is contacted by Benjamin Lockwood, who invites her to his mansion in Northern California. There, she meets his assistant Eli Mills, who reveals that Lockwood has a private sanctuary for the dinosaurs on another island. He asks Claire to help him transport 11 species from Isla Nublar, including Blue, the last surviving velociraptor. Claire agrees and recruits Owen Grady, who initially refuses but changes his mind after seeing a video of him training Blue as a baby.

Claire and Owen fly to Isla Nublar with Zia Rodriguez and Franklin Webb, two members of the Dinosaur Protection Group. They meet up with Ken Wheatley and his team of mercenaries, who have been hired by Mills to capture the dinosaurs. They locate Blue using a tracking device that Claire previously installed on her. Owen approaches Blue cautiously, but she attacks him after being shot by Wheatley's men. Zia insists on staying with Blue to treat her wound, while Wheatley captures Owen and Claire as well. Franklin manages to evade capture by hiding in a gyrosphere.

The betrayal and auction at Lockwood Manor

Owen and Claire wake up on a ship carrying the captured dinosaurs to Lockwood's estate. They learn that Mills has been secretly working with Dr. Henry Wu, who needs Blue's DNA to create a new hybrid dinosaur called the Indoraptor, which is designed to be a military weapon. They also discover that Mills has been planning to sell all the dinosaurs to international buyers at an underground auction.

Owen and Claire manage to escape from their cell and free the other dinosaurs from their cages. They also encounter Maisie Lockwood, who has sneaked into the auction room and witnessed the Indoraptor being sold to a Russian arms dealer. Maisie tells them that she is Lockwood's cloned daughter, and that he and Hammond had a falling out over human cloning. She also reveals that Mills killed Lockwood after he found out about his plans.

The escape and rampage of the dinosaurs

The Indoraptor escapes from its cage and goes on a killing spree, attacking the buyers, the mercenaries, and the staff. Owen and Claire try to stop it, but it proves to be too fast, smart, and agile. They also have to deal with Wheatley, who tries to collect a tooth from the Indoraptor, but gets eaten instead.

Meanwhile, Franklin and Zia, who have also escaped from the ship, hack into the security system and release a Stygimoloch, a dinosaur with a spiked head, into the auction room. The Stygimoloch causes chaos and destruction, allowing Owen and Claire to rescue Maisie from Mills, who tries to take her away.

The Indoraptor chases them to the roof of the manor, where it corners them. Owen tries to distract it with a gun, but it recognizes the laser sight as a target indicator and turns on him. Claire then uses the gun to make the Indoraptor attack Wheatley's partner, who is holding a tranquilizer rifle. The Indoraptor bites the rifle and gets sedated, but not before it lunges at Owen and Claire, who barely avoid its jaws.

As the Indoraptor falls off the roof, Blue arrives and tackles it, sending them both crashing into a triceratops skull on display in the hall below. The skull impales the Indoraptor, killing it. Blue survives and shares a moment with Owen, who thanks her for saving them.

The final confrontation and decision

Owen, Claire, and Maisie return to the basement lab, where they find Wu and his men trying to salvage some of his research and samples. They are confronted by Mills, who has retrieved the Indominus rex bone from the Indoraptor's cage. He tries to escape with it, but is stopped by a stampeding Carnotaurus, which breaks through the wall.

A gas leak caused by the Carnotaurus triggers an explosion that releases hydrogen cyanide into the air. The gas threatens to suffocate the remaining dinosaurs in the lab, who are trapped behind a large metal door. Claire has the control to open the door, but hesitates, knowing that doing so would unleash the dinosaurs into the world.

Malcolm's words echo in her mind: "These creatures were here before us. And if we're not careful, they'll be here after. We're gonna have to adjust to new threats that we can't imagine. We've entered a new era. Welcome to Jurassic World."

Claire decides not to open the door, accepting that the dinosaurs should die. However, Maisie pushes the button instead, saying that they are alive like her. The dinosaurs run out of the lab and into the woods.

Mills tries to flee with the bone again, but is devoured by Rexy, the original T-rex from Jurassic Park, who then crushes the bone under her foot. Rexy then roars at a lion in a nearby zoo, symbolizing her reclaiming her place as the king of beasts.

Analysis and evaluation

The strengths of Jurassic World 2

The visuals and effects

One of the most impressive aspects of Jurassic World 2 is its stunning visuals and effects. The movie features a variety of dinosaurs, both old and new, that look realistic and lifelike. The movie also uses a combination of animatronics and CGI to create seamless interactions between the actors and the dinosaurs.

The movie also showcases some breathtaking scenery and cinematography, such as the volcanic eruption on Isla Nublar, which creates a contrast between fire and ash. The movie also uses lighting and color to create different moods and atmospheres, such as the dark and claustrophobic scenes in Lockwood's manor.

The action and suspense

Another strength of Jurassic World 2 is its thrilling action and suspense. The movie keeps the audience on the edge of their seats with several exciting and tense sequences, such as the escape from the island, the chase in the city, and the showdown on the roof. The movie also uses sound and music to enhance the impact and emotion of the scenes, such as the roar of the dinosaurs, the explosion of the volcano, and the score by Michael Giacchino.

The emotional and moral dilemmas

A third strength of Jurassic World 2 is its emotional and moral dilemmas. The movie makes the audience care about the fate of the dinosaurs, who are portrayed as complex and intelligent beings, not just mindless monsters. The movie also makes the audience question their own values and choices, as they are faced with difficult decisions and ethical issues, such as whether to save or kill the dinosaurs, whether to exploit or respect them, and whether to let them live or die.

The weaknesses of Jurassic World 2

The clichés and plot holes

One of the weaknesses of Jurassic World 2 is its clichés and plot holes. The movie relies on many tropes and stereotypes that have been used before in previous Jurassic movies, such as the evil corporation, the greedy villain, the mad scientist, the heroic couple, and the cute kid. The movie also has many inconsistencies and gaps in its logic and realism, such as how the dinosaurs survived on the island for three years without food or water, how they were transported without anyone noticing, how they escaped from their cages without security measures, and how they adapted to a new environment without problems.

The lack of character development

Another weakness of Jurassic World 2 is its lack of character development. The movie does not give enough depth or personality to its characters, who are mostly one-dimensional and predictable. The movie also does not explore the relationships or motivations of its characters, who often act out of convenience or necessity. The movie also wastes some of its potential characters, such as Lockwood, who is killed off before he can reveal his backstory, or Malcolm, who only appears briefly at the beginning and end of the movie.

The unrealistic and inconsistent science

A third weakness of Jurassic World 2 is its unrealistic and inconsistent science. The movie does not follow the rules or principles of biology, genetics, or paleontology, but rather invents its own to suit its plot. The movie also contradicts some of its own established facts or lore from previous Jurassic movies, such as how the dinosaurs look or behave, how they are created or cloned, or how they interact with humans or other animals.

Conclusion

Summary of the main points

In conclusion, Jurassic World 2 is a movie that offers a lot of entertainment and excitement for dinosaur lovers and action fans. It has amazing visuals and effects, thrilling action and suspense, and emotional and moral dilemmas. However, it also has some flaws and drawbacks that might disappoint or annoy some viewers. It has clichés and plot holes, lack of character development, and unrealistic and inconsistent science.

Personal opinion and recommendation

Personally, I enjoyed Jurassic World 2 as a fun and adventurous movie that kept me engaged and entertained. I liked seeing the dinosaurs in different settings and situations, and I felt for their plight and survival. I also appreciated some of the themes and messages that the movie tried to convey, such as the responsibility of protecting endangered species and the bond between humans and animals.

However, I also recognized some of the problems and limitations that the movie had in terms of its story and characters. I wished that it had more originality and creativity in its plot and characters, and that it had more accuracy and consistency in its science and logic. I also felt that some of the scenes and dialogues were too cheesy or corny for my taste.

Therefore, I would recommend Jurassic World 2 to anyone who likes dinosaurs and action, and who is not too bothered by the flaws and shortcomings of the movie. I would also suggest watching it with an open mind and a sense of humor, and not taking it too seriously or literally. I think that Jurassic World 2 is a movie that can be enjoyed for what it is, a fun and adventurous ride that pays homage to the Jurassic legacy.

Future prospects and implications

Jurassic World 2 ends with a cliffhanger that sets up the stage for the next and final installment of the Jurassic World trilogy, which is scheduled to be released in 2022. The movie shows that the dinosaurs have escaped into the world, and that humans will have to coexist with them or face the consequences. The movie also hints at the possibility of more human cloning and genetic engineering, as well as more hybrid dinosaurs and other creatures.

The movie raises many questions and challenges for the future of the Jurassic franchise, such as:

  • How will humans and dinosaurs interact and adapt to each other?

  • What will be the environmental and social impacts of having dinosaurs in the world?

  • What will be the ethical and legal issues of cloning and modifying life forms?

  • What will be the role and fate of Blue and Maisie, who are both unique and special?

  • What will be the new threats and conflicts that will arise from having dinosaurs in the world?

These are some of the questions and challenges that I hope to see addressed and explored in Jurassic World 3, which I am looking forward to watching. I hope that Jurassic World 3 will deliver a satisfying and meaningful conclusion to the Jurassic saga, and that it will honor the legacy and spirit of Jurassic Park.
